The Impact of Missouri’s Climate on Roofing Materials

Count on us for durable and reliable roofing, siding, and gutter services across St. Charles County.

Did you know that the Midwest sees everything from 100-degree summers to ice storms in the same year? So, what does that mean for your roof?

In this blog, you’ll learn how Missouri’s unpredictable climate affects common roofing materials and what that means for long-term durability. Let’s check it out!

How Weather in Missouri Tests Your Roof

Hot summers, hail, freezing rain—it’s a lot for any roof to handle. Here’s how different conditions affect the performance and lifespan of popular roofing materials.

High Heat & Intense Sun

Extreme heat can cause roofing materials to expand, fade, and weaken over time. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight breaks down less durable materials faster.

Asphalt shingles can expand and contract, but heat-resistant shingles offer better protection and help prevent early cracking.
Metal roofs reflect sunlight and stay cooler, which reduces wear.
Slate holds up well in high heat but may need structural reinforcement due to weight.
Tile roofing handles the sun well and keeps attic spaces cooler.

Heavy Rain & Flash Floods

Frequent storms bring large amounts of water quickly, testing how well a roof sheds moisture. Poor drainage or weak seals can lead to leaks.

Asphalt shingles with proper underlayment hold up well, but installation must be watertight.
Metal roofing is naturally water-shedding and excellent in downpours.
Slate is dense and durable, offering solid rain resistance.
Tile roofing is water-resistant but can be vulnerable to cracks during hard impacts.

Hailstorms

Hail varies in size but can cause significant damage to roofing surfaces, leading to leaks and wear if not addressed quickly.

Impact-rated asphalt shingles absorb strikes better and may reduce the need for emergency roof repair.
Metal panels may dent but rarely break or leak.
Slate is brittle and may crack under large hailstones.
Tile roofing can break easily when hit by heavy hail.

Winter Ice & Freezing Temps

Snow and ice cause issues when they freeze and thaw repeatedly. This can create ice dams, leaks, or structural strain.

Asphalt shingles with proper attic ventilation resist ice dam formation.
Metal roofing sheds snow easily and lowers the chance of weight damage.
Slate handles freezing well if installed correctly.
Tile roofing may absorb water and crack during freeze-thaw cycles.
